I had the distinct honor of visiting the Flint Street location of Friends Center for Children (Friends Center), where I arrived as a stranger and left feeling like a true “Friend.” I expected to see toddlers smiling and running around, but what I witnessed was far more profound: minds growing, learning and discovering the world for the first time. I saw tiny neurons firing, connections forming in real time as children played, laughed and explored. I saw teachers pouring every ounce of patience, care and knowledge into each word, each gesture, each moment. This is a space where curiosity is nurtured, independence is celebrated and the foundation of a lifetime of learning is being built quietly, powerfully and with love.
I had the privilege of observing Keila Perez, Head Teacher at Friends Center. Her work is more than a job; it is a calling, a fierce, unwavering devotion to giving every child the strong, loving start they need to thrive. Watching her, I saw how she transforms learning into something profound, proving every day that early childhood education is not just the beginning of learning it is the foundation of a child’s life.
Playing outside with her students, ages 9 months to 2 years, I was quickly pulled into their world. By the time I left, my shoes and hair were covered in woodchips and I could not have been happier. In those moments, I saw the pure joy of childhood and the deep, meaningful connections that make early learning so magical.
You can read all the statistics, understand the critical nature of early childhood education but nothing prepares you for being there, feeling the energy, hearing tiny voices, watching sparks of curiosity catch fire. At Social Impact Partners, we believe in supporting and scaling high-quality programs like FCC across the state because every child deserves the chance to grow, explore and thrive. Experiencing these classrooms firsthand is a powerful reminder of why our mission matters: to help build an affordable, accessible and high-quality system that meets the needs of children, families, providers and communities.
When I sat with Keila, every answer she gave reflected the extraordinary power of Friends Center. She spoke of the moment she first met the teachers, families and children, how it became clear this was more than a drop-off. It’s a place where meaningful work happens every day, curiosity is celebrated and her passion for early childhood education comes alive.
She reflected on a moment that defines her “why”:
“I’ll never forget a child on the autism spectrum who didn’t yet have words. During our song ‘Down by the Bay,’ I heard a soft hum from him. He wasn’t saying the words yet but he was joining the song in his own way. In that quiet sound, I saw the beauty of learning, the spark of understanding and the limitless potential every child carries.
I almost cried. That hum was proof of a mind at work, proof that he was listening, learning, taking it all in. It whispered the truth: this work matters. This is why I’m here.”
Early childhood education is underfunded, under-resourced and understaffed. The challenges are real but meeting Keila gave me something statistics never can provide: hope. Hope in the dedication and unwavering commitment of teachers who show up every day to nurture and inspire the youngest learners. Hope that with centers like Friends Center, every child can get the strong, loving start they deserve.
We are proud to partner with Friends Center and see firsthand the profound impact they have on early childhood education – no only in New Haven but as a model inspiring other centers across the state. This is why Social Impact Partners invests in early childhood education, because we see the potential in every child, the dedication of teachers like Keila and the profound life-shaping learning that happens in these earliest years. Supporting programs like Friends Center is not just about education; it’s about building thriving communities one child at a time.
As Keila said, “The first years of a child’s life aren’t just the beginning; they build everything that comes after. Every lesson, every moment of care, every connection matters. When you see that, you realize this work is nothing short of sacred.”
