Mission Moments: Maritime Odyssey Preschool

Early childhood education is not simply childcare — it is one of the strongest predictors of lifelong outcomes. More than 90% of a child’s brain develops before age five, shaping their readiness for school, their belief in their own potential and the stability felt by their families.

Research shows that children who are ready for kindergarten are far more likely to thrive in life. At Maritime Odyssey Preschool, these truths guide every decision. Children’s well-being comes first, and every program, interaction and environment is rooted in intention and care.

Leadership That Makes Excellence Possible

Dr. Monisha Gibson, co-founder and CEO, embodies purpose and unwavering care. As she guided me through the school, she paused to celebrate each piece of artwork created by children and staff that lined the center’s walls, embraced teachers with genuine warmth and kneeled to welcome students by name as they ran to her with unrestrained joy.

Her leadership — steady, humble and guided by conviction rather than recognition — creates a culture where excellence feels inevitable. She speaks of her coworkers as family, a reflection of the deep trust, shared purpose and culture of care she has intentionally built — the unmistakable mark of a leader in a class of her own.

Her presence reinforces a core belief we hold at Social Impact Partners: early childhood education is powerful, essential and transformative — and strong, values-driven leaders make lasting change possible.

A Culture of Joy, Learning and High Expectations

Throughout Odyssey, you see children who are supported, nurtured and celebrated. High-quality learning comes alive here, with STREAM – science, technology, reading, engineering, arts and math – woven into every classroom. Curiosity is the starting point, high expectations are the norm and above all, every child’s mind is recognized for its unique potential to grow, explore and thrive.

In one room, infants are soothed for naptime by the rhythm of a story. Nearby, toddlers lean in to learn how plants grow. Down the hall, students paint vibrant pictures, sing songs and dance to the beat of their own drums. Upstairs, a child who is blind sits in her teacher’s lap, smiling as she explores materials through touch – a simple moment that reflects a deeper truth: caring for a child begins with recognizing and responding to their unique needs from the earliest age.

Programs like JumpStart ensure that this early, personalized attention is available at Odyssey — offering individualized support so children with developmental disabilities receive what they need to thrive. This level of high-quality, tailored care is rare, yet it is incredibly important, because every child — regardless of their differences — deserves the same opportunity to reach their full potential.

Across every room, one constant emerges: profound love, care and dedication to each child.

Families at the Center

Odyssey’s deepest distinction is its respect for families. Parents are seen not as “just parents,” but as whole people — each with strengths, pressures, hopes and stories — and as essential partners in their child’s learning.

This belief comes to life through the innovative Family Executive Center, that offers parents free, comprehensive support, from coaching and tools to navigate school systems, to guidance in advocating for their children, pursuing education and career goals, and strengthening stability at home.

Further, Odyssey supports families throughout their early parenting journey with:

  • Prenatal supports and parent education through home visits
  • Technology access and coaching that strengthen the home-school connection
  • Mental health counseling, mentoring, and trauma-informed care
  • Employment pathways, financial literacy, and long-term stability supports
  • Wraparound services that meet families in the rhythm of their real lives

This is more than early childhood care — it is a true partnership and community in action.

The Power of Teachers

I had the joy of sitting down with Miss Evelyn, a lead teacher who has spent seven years at Odyssey — seven years shaping young minds with patience, skill and unwavering love. She shared that this is the first place she has ever worked where she feels truly seen, valued and supported, both personally and professionally. Last year, she became a homeowner for the first time — though not the last, she joked with a laugh — a milestone made possible in part because Odyssey invests in its educators with the same intention and care that Miss Evelyn gives to children every day.

Teachers like Miss Evelyn are the quiet — and too often unsung — architects of possibility. She sees every child as a blueprint of potential, shaped not by zip code, but by the love, skill and belief of the adults who guide them.

Educators like Evelyn inspire our work at Social Impact Partners and deepen our resolve to ensure every teacher in Connecticut receives the respect, living wage and career resources they deserve.

Our Partnership and Shared Commitment

It is no surprise that Odyssey is a strategic partner with SIP in the ECE Growth Accelerator — a new program to strengthen the business, operations and financial sustainability of high-quality early childhood centers in under-resourced communities to prepare them for growth. Through this work, we aim to engage 30 early childhood center leaders and create more than 3,200 new affordable child care seats, expanding opportunities for children, families and providers across the state.

Our partnership with Odyssey reflects exactly why this work matters: their mission, vision and daily practice demonstrate how transformative early childhood education becomes when excellence and equity are not competing values, but inseparable ones.
